First Date Impressions - The Science Behind Clothes
Within the digital age, the online dating boom has intensified the significance of the first date. Every year, millions of singletons across the nation prepare for this coveted moment, with many wondering about the science behind attraction - from what to wear to where to take their new love interest.
To understand the nation's perceptions around first date impressions, we surveyed over 2,000 British singletons to reveal the psychology behind first date outfits and locations for those hoping to find love. Our research also investigates dating habits across the country, with supporting expert opinions from Relationship Expert, Alex Limanowka and Personal Finance Expert, Janine Marsh.
Colour coded: the most attractive first date colours
Choosing the perfect outfit for a first date can be a daunting decision. We asked the nation which clothing colours they find the most attractive for a partner when on a first date and the results may be surprising.
Black is the most attractive colour to wear on a first date
Rank | Colour | Percentage of Brits who find these first-date clothing colours attractive |
---|---|---|
1 | Black | 70% |
2 | White | 64% |
3 | Dark colours | 63% |
4 | Blue | 61% |
5 | Grey | 50% |
When it comes to the clothing colours that are the easiest on the eye, black clothing rises to the top, with a majority of 70 per cent of Brits finding this colour the most attractive on a first date. From a classic little black dress to a timeless black tee, opting for darker clothing proves to be our first style secret for an initial romantic encounter.
It’s also important to recognise that the most attractive first date clothing colours of course vary depending on your style and personality too. According to relationship expert Alex Limanowka, “In the first seven seconds of meeting someone, our brain processes a range of factors to form our first impression. This makes selecting an appropriate outfit for a first date crucial to feeling comfortable and confident.
Your attire should reflect your individual style and what makes you comfortable. It's essential to avoid wearing clothes that make you feel uncomfortable or that don't represent your style. You want to put in some effort to look and feel good, but not to the extent that you come across as overly keen or intense.”
Style staples: the most attractive outfit materials to wear on a first date
Knowing the types of clothing materials your date might find attractive isn’t always an obvious answer, which largely depends on the type of fashion each individual appreciates. We asked Brits which clothing materials are deemed to be the most attractive outfit formulas.
Denim is the most attractive clothing material for a first date
Rank | Colour | Percentage of Brits that find these materials attractive on a first date |
---|---|---|
1 | Denim | 57% |
2 | Cotton | 57% |
3 | Silk | 44% |
4 | Linen | 41% |
5 | Leather | 41% |
The survey officially reveals that denim is the most attractive clothing material to wear for a first date, as 57 percent of singletons across the country find the fabric a good look. Cotton ranks a close second on the list also with 57 percent of males and females finding the material appealing, whilst silk comes in third with 44 percent thinking this would be a great first date clothing choice. Linen ranks fourth on our list of most desirable first date clothing choices, whilst leather ranks closely behind in fifth place.
Alex Limanowka comments “while clothing preferences can vary from person to person, there are a few reasons why people generally prefer their date to be wearing clothes made of denim, cotton, silk, linen and leather materials. These clothing materials are preferred on first dates as they provide breathability and comfort, which helps one feel relaxed.”
Dressed for good luck: the UK’s first date clothing superstitions
In an effort to debunk the importance of the types of clothes that the UK’s singletons wear on a first date, we explored whether Brits believe in any dating superstitions to do with outfit choices.
Over one in six Brits wear their lucky underwear on a first date.
Rank | First date clothing superstitions | Percentage of Brits that believe in these clothing superstitions |
---|---|---|
1 |
Wearing black as it has an attractive effect and brings good luck |
17% |
2 | Wearing lucky underwear | 17% |
3 | Wearing something new to signify a new start to a relationship | 16% |
4 | Wearing your lucky colour | 15% |
5 | Wearing red as it's believed to signify passion and love | 15% |
According to our survey, 17 percent of Brits like to wear black as it brings good luck and has an attractive effect on a potential partner too. Wearing lucky underwear is also tied with 17 percent of Brits admitting to believing in doing this for a first date and wearing something new to signify a new start to a relationship comes third with 16 percent of Brits agreeing.
Alex Limanowka also comments, “it is common for individuals to have their preferences or ways of making themselves feel more comfortable, such as wearing their favourite clothes or items they consider "lucky."
Ultimately, the most crucial factor is to wear something appropriate for the occasion that reflects your personal style and makes you feel self-assured. Whether it is a superstition or a preference for comfort, the ultimate goal is to boost confidence.”

“Being a single person can have considerable expenses aka ‘single tax’, and finding the one is not a cost-free process. With Brits googling ‘Cheap date ideas’ 20,400 times per year in the UK, it’s not surprising that the majority of the UK’s preferred date locations include a variety of free activities”
